Sydney's First Haircut

It has been a long time coming...Syd's mullet had to go, but we continued to put off cutting off the party aspect of her sweet mullet. By the way, Chris nor I have any experience in cutting hair. Here is what happened...

BeforeDuringAfter, isn't she adorable? I am quite pleased the way it turned out, she looks so grown up! And, yes we did keep her hair for memory sake!

Dermatolgist/Allergist

Last week I took Brooke to the Derm because she had a terrible flare up of eczema around her eyes. It was terrible, she literally had bright red circles around both of her eyes. We got more ointment that is safe to put on her face, it seems to be working fairly well. We also got a referral to an Allergist because the Derm said kids that have eczema outbreaks in the Summer typically have an allergy that causes the break out. Kids who have it worse in the Winter is simply a response to the dry air. Last year was the same with Brooke and Taylor, they get it mostly around their ankles, wrists and sometimes behind their knees and elbows. Taylor has not had the patches around the eyes, thank goodness, because Brooke looked really really bad.

The day I took Brooke to the Dr. was great, because it was just her and I and we had a good time playing in the patient room. She was super happy and so was I, and then...we were about to leave and she was walking around the room exploring when she turned around into the side of the counter top. She immediately screamed, I picked her up and then the nurse and I realized she was bleeding like crazy. Ugh, we couldn't really tell at first if it was coming from her nose or mouth. It freaks me out when I see blood until I can figure out where it is coming from. Well, it was her nose and it was going down her throat so she was coughing and then it was spraying everywhere. Poor little girl. The nurse was really helpful and tried to get as much as possible off of us, but we then realized when I picked Brooke up she hugged me and got blood all over my hair, not good for a blonde. Man, I had showered before the appointment and even straightened my hair because I was going out with my girlfriends for dinner. Bummer! I also wanted to stop at Sendick's to grab some dinner for Chris, but how could I walk around covered in all this blood, oh, and it was a 20 minute drive back home so I was not going to go home and come all the way back out. As it turned out the nurse was so great she got the majority of it out of my hair, it was just a little on the pink side and somewhat crunchy. I covered Brooke's shirt in stickers to cover the blood and we were off to the store! Whew!

We then had an appointment with an Allergist, Dr Volkham. Taylor and Brooke were both being seen in hopes of figuring out the origin of their eczema. I knew they were going to be doing the skin prick testing and I was a little concerned how the girls would do. Silly me. Each girl was tested for indoor and outdoor allergens, I decided to hold off on food allergen testing because I really do not think that is a cause at all. The test consisted of two "prick trays" with eight needles each. Taylor did not flinch even a little, seriously??? She was more ticklish from the nurse writing with a pen on her back to identify the trays. Brooke, pretty much had the same response, she gave a little scowl, but not a whimper at all. I still believe that with all the poking and proding the girls endured in the NICU has increased their tolerance for pain.

So the results were much better than I expected, mostly I was worried that they would be allergic to pet dander and Wrigs would be in jeopardy. Taylor reacted to NOTHING!!! Brooke had a significant allergic reaction to trees. Typically the tree allergy season is mid March to May. The strange thing about eczema is that it is really hard to identify the triggers. With Taylor not having any reactions, the Doctor believes she has the non-allergic form of eczema. Brooke's eczema may or may not be exacerbated by the tree allergy. We will start both on antihistamines next Spring to see if that helps keep the eczema under control. Truth be told, Taylor's eczema is not all that bad, Brooke's is a different story. He sweet little face looks pretty bad and I pray that we can keep it under control next season. The poor little girl looks like she was beat up with her red eyes. The only good thing is that she doesn't seem to be too bothered by it. Thank goodness the girls do not have the itch that typically comes with eczema...YET!

The girls had a blast exploring the patient room!

Slumber Party!

Last weekend, for our anniversary Busia and Papa decided they would give us a break and take the three girls overnight. I had no doubt things would go smoothly and the sure did. Everyone had an absolute blast, my parents are still talking about it. The question was, would they sleep well there without me at the house? We had slept there a number of times in the past and they did great, but without Mom or Dad, how would it go? I had not even one reservation because I knew Busia and Papa would completely exhaust them, like they always do and when bedtime came they would be more than ready. That is exactly what happened. They are like piggies and slept like logs. What a great time for everyone!

While they were all having the time of their lives, Chris and I got to see what it was like to have a weekend with one baby. We had a great time as well. We went out for breakfast, ran some errands, went downtown to our old neighborhood and walked around and generally had a nice chill weekend with Vaughn. We were definitely excited to see the girls by Sunday afternoon.

The girls were very interested in Papa's wooden alligator that he keeps by his office door. They wanted to check it out all weekend. Busia and Papa eventually had to close the door and tell the girls the alligator went night night so they would do something other than stand staring at the thing! Then the girls began saying " night night alligator, shhhhhh". How cute is that?

Vaughn, Vaughn, You're so Stong!

My goodness, this little guy is super strong! I didn't believe what I saw this evening, but after seeing him do this three times in a row, I believed it AND I got it on video!

Can you believe at 1 month 4 days old this dude rolled over???

This text below is text copied directly from the website www.babycenter.com:

'Your baby may be able to kick himself over, from his tummy to his back, as early as age 2 to 3 months. It may take him until he's about 5 or 6 months to flip from back to front, though, because he needs stronger neck and arm muscles for that maneuver.

At about 3 months, when placed on his stomach, your baby will lift his head and shoulders high, using his arms for support. This mini-pushup helps him strengthen the muscles he'll use to roll over. He'll amaze you (and himself!) the first time he flips over. (While babies often flip from front to back first, doing it the other way is perfectly normal, too.)'

Ok, I'll stop, I am just really proud, I haven't even spent a ton of time rolling him from side to side to get him used to the idea. It is amazing to me, especially because with the girls everything always took a tad longer because they were born so darn early.

Overall, things are going really well with this little guy! He is gaining weight, I don't know how much at this point, but he looks bigger and he is out of newborn clothes. He has started to sleep longer between bottles at night. We had about a week where I would feed him around 6pm and he would pretty much cry for 1-2 hours, would finally crash out only to wake an hour later ready to eat again. In talking to another "triplet Mom" who had a little girl two days before I had Vaughn, she said her Ped told her to put the baby to bed after they eat at 6. They are being over stimulated at that time of night and need to be put down to rest. Sure enough, it worked! He even slept for 6 hours last night. We were stunned! In fact this evening around 7 Chris and I were getting ready to eat dinner and I stopped and said, "can you believe we have 4 kids under the age of 2 and it is silent in this house?" Honestly, I could have never dreamed this would be the case. All things are not a total breeze at this point, we still are getting up at night and I am pretty much tired all the time, as is Chris. He has been staying up waiting for Vaughn to wake to eat and sometime that means not going to be until 1am, a far cry from the 10pm we normally went to bed!

Here are a few pics:

Shoe Shopping

On Monday, Cassandra and I took the girls to the mall to buy shoes. I swear I feel like I am constantly buying these girls shoes. Their feet are growing like weeds these days, shoes are only fitting them for a month or two. Cassandra is always up for whatever so we decided to leave the strollers in the car and walk with the girls. I had Vaughn in the car seat and help one girl. Cassandra walked with the other two. They clearly loved the freedom and were very good about staying with us. It got a little crazy in the shoe store with Brooke wanting to pull all the shoes our of the boxes, but the ladies in the store loved it because they were so interested in the fact that they were triplets. The best part of the trip was when we were walking to the car, Cassandra has Taylor and Sydney I was a bit ahead of them. I heard Taylor say something, and I honestly would not have believed it had Cassandra not been there to confirm what she said. Taylor said, "I love shoes"! Are you kidding me??? Have you seen my closet??? I LOVE shoes and have a ridiculous quantity of them, throughout my first pregnancy I was so nervous my feet would grow and my investment would be lost. From the sound of it Taylor has gotten the "shoe gene" from me. She hasn't even said I love Mommy or I love Daddy...yet she knows she loves shoes. We may have trouble on our hands with her! This is only the beginning of hilarious comments by the girls!

My shoe collection, it is so sad I have not worn any on this wall because my prego feet couldn't take it
Only a few of these have seen daylight, can't wait to get them out again.

Baby Vaughn is Growing!

My fear is already being realized, and that fear is that my blog will be put on the back burner with the arrival of Vaughn. I really just have not taken the time to keep the updates coming. Though, not for a lack of material.

Anyway, this little guy is an absolute doll! He is super sweet and overall he is doing fantastic! We are having some reflux issues that we are tending to, in hopes of making him more comfortable after feedings. We will have to wait another week or so to see results. He is on Prevacid and I will be modifying my diet to eliminate dairy. It all started with him grunting a lot and seeming to be very uncomfortable after feedings, he also has begun spitting up more and more and he is pretty gassy, which is where my diet may be coming into play. It seems to be worse at night, which makes sleeping difficult and in turn makes for one sleepy Mama! Yikes, sleep deprivation is not my friend. Basically I become an emotional mess, poor everyone around me! He has started to have an evening fussy period which I distinctly remember with the girls. The biggest challenge I face is internally, the guilt I feel if I spend time during the day napping and not playing with the girls. I realize it is a short lived situation, but it continues to weigh heavily on my mind, especially at 3AM when I am delirious!

Ok...enough about me, let's talk more about this cutie pie! He had his 2 week appointment on July 7th. His birth weight was 6lbs 9oz, he dropped to 5lbs 15oz in the hospital and was discharged at 6lbs 1oz. Two days after we came home he weighed 6lb 2.5oz, which was positive. Dr. Patti gave us a clean bill of health and was happy to see the weight gain. At his two week appointment he weighed 7lbs 3oz (10-25th percentile) and 20.5 inches long (50th percentile) WOW!!! I was thrilled to hear that he gained so much weight because this whole nursing thing makes it tough to know if he is getting enough to eat. I figured things were going well with the amount of poop and pee he was outputting, but I didn't expect this, yeah us!

Vaughn's first picture
First bath, doesn't seem to be much of a fan
So tiny in his care seat for the fist time as we left the hospital
His cord finally came off after about 10 days, that was new to me
His little frog outfit, that barely fits him now!
My blue pedicure I had just before Vaughn was born to celebrate our new little boy
Such a concerned look, the crinkled forehead cracks me up
I took this video when he and I were just hanging out watching TV, he was so cute I ended up watching him more than the TV. Love him!

Gosh am I behind on updates on him. I took him into the doctor again on 7/11 because he started spitting up a ton over the weekend and was up more at night acting uncomfortable. As it turns out we made a few changes, including feeding him upright, which has totally worked. He is spitting up far less, amazing what a little modification can do! A big thanks to Dr. Schwake, not our normal Ped, but I am considering switching after my experience with him! Vaughn now weighs in at a whopping 7lbs 9oz, yes he gained 5 ounces in 4 days! I can not wait to have a little chunky monkey!

I feel like everything is so new and different from what we experienced with the girls. With them it the hospital for so long and then always having to adjust their developmental milestones for their prematurity, I never really knew exactly what to expect from them. That really hasn't changed a lot but only because I am not reading like I read when the girls were born. I have little free time to be reading at this point to know what an almost 3 week old does, but I am pretty sure this is quite good. Nice strength buddy!

Up Down Up Down

Grandma brought over awesome balloons for each girl and the they loved them!!! They even learned "up down, up down, up down" almost immediately. They are too cute!
